There it is. The picture from JPG Magazine that got 10,000 views in just one week. One hell of a long week and not just for me, a handful of great friends were involved in this experiment, too. Most of them can be found over there on my blogroll. Hopefully, someday I’ll have a page full of friends, just like them.
For a few months now, I’ve been talking about what could be done if a bunch of us got together and networked, used some of the tools available online and concentrated on promoting each other everytime one of us had something published.
I’ve been looking and learning. This week, I have had a whole year of looking and learning experience with this online publishing business. That’s right, a whole year, I checked the records over at Matador Travel, just now. I joined them March 2, 2009 to see what I could learn about travel writing. Then, I started picking up ideas here and there all over the internet and putting them to use.
Everybody has their own way of doing things and everybody develops their own style. My style just happens to be something like, “You can look at the book, but you ain’t gonna learn from it if you don’t jump right in and do it”. Reading a book or watching a video won’t teach you how to swim. You have to jump in the water and start flailing around until you get it right. Some people swim, some sink and some even help each other, on the shallow end, until before long, they all become swimmers.
Well, the crowd who helped me with this photo today, they’re all good swimmers. We’ve been bumping into each other all over the internet. We each have our own style, very different style of writing; probably of swimming, too. And we circle the globe. Looking and learning. And getting published. They have helped me more than they’ll ever know. I am watching them and picking up bits and pieces of their skills to see what fits my style of swimming. While they are sleeping, I am surfing. Surfing the internet and I find out where they’ve been (Published). And, looking and learning about all the nifty gadgets available to get other people reading what my friends wrote.
Then, I take these tools, I don’t know how to use, and I WHACK THEM ! Well, after awhile, from using the tools, I learned which ones worked and which didn’t, I decided it was time to put them to a test. That’s where the idea of taking an unpublished photo, posting it online and having everyone Whack-it, to see if we could generate 10,000 hits in a week, came from.
They probably thought it was impossible and for awhile; so did I. We did it. We loaded up our dashboards with every worthwhile tool available and maybe, even some worthless ones and WHACKED that picture until it got 10,000 hits in one week.
Anybody can do it. Some folks will want the details on how we did it, I’m sure. That’s easy enough. You can LOOK and LEARN and swim with us for awhile !
Cheers,
Mike
